Hugging - one of the things I'm missing most in the Lockdown

Hugs…

One thing I miss most whilst we observe the restrictions in lockdown is hugging. It’s such a human thing to do.

Let’s pretend you’ve just arrived from Mars and you don’t know what a hug is: a hug is where two people put their arms around one another, pull each other close, embrace and pause in a moment of physical connectedness.

Us Lawsons give good hugs. We know a ‘proper hug’ can’t be given half-heartedly; you have to commit to it fully!

Hugs promote a sense of trust, warmth and reassurance in a tactile form of non-verbal communication. These plutonic moments of affection often impress upon us that things are going to be okay.

According to Wikipedia, the etymology of the hug could begin with the Nordic word ‘hugga’, which meant to comfort, first used in the 1560s. Or it might have originated with the German word ‘hegen’, which means ‘to foster or cherish’.

A hug is the complete antithesis from keeping two metres apart; it is – quite obviously - closeness as opposed to distance. I suspect our understanding of a return to some semblance of ‘normality’, will come when we are freely hugging one another again.

Hope you’re all doing okay!

Sending virtual hugs,

Andy x
